42: Comparing the Baby Doll Look and the Chowey Teddy Bear Heads

My earlier blog talked about the fox-like  expression.  Take note the foxy adjective referred to an expression rather than the head itself.    In the United States, a foxy head means a long muzzle and this is not what a fox-like expression means!!!  Therefore, to describe a head as a fox-like head is quite different and could be confusing because it gives the reader the impression that a fox-like head is the same as a fox-like expression.  Very closely associated with this fox-like expression is the so called pushed-in Baby Doll faces, sample pictures which were included in Blog 41.

The main difference between the pushed-in Baby Doll faces and the chowey Teddy Bear heads is all in the muzzle:

Baby Doll:  Short V-shaped muzzle.  This implies a narrow base in a sharper edge on the muzzle.  Because of the narrow base, it has less tolerance for length in the muzzle;  otherwise, the muzzle will look long.  The edge is sharper without being snipey.
It sort of reminds me of the small upwards English noses(human)  and the small mouths of the Japanese dolls drinking tea...both features when combined has the aura of a smiling face.   The small erect ears, the small dark almond shaped eyes with dark eye-rims around the eyes, the pronounced stop...all these together with the fine, short,  wedged V-shaped muzzle,  all these contribute to this pushed-in Baby Doll Head which has that smiling fox-like expression...a refined exquisite look like porcelain!

Teddy Bear:   Short U-shaped muzzle.  The implies a wide base with a blunter edge on the muzzle.  Because of the wider base, it has more tolerance for length in muzzle;  a comparatively longer muzzle may appear shorter vis a vis the V-shaped muzzle.  It usually has more cheeks on the face, making the muzzle appear blunter and shorter.  It could almost be described as

almost the look of an owl.  The small ears oftentimes erect, the dark brown almond shaped eyes, a decent stop with a good heavy head coat...all these together with the broad  short  U-shaped muzzle, all contribute to this cute chowey Teddy Bear Head look.

The Classic Baby Doll heads usually linked with a finer bones in body and in legs whilst that of the Modern Teddy Bear Head goes with a heavier body frame and legs.  In my mind, my ideal is something in between the two...whether the muzzle in Baby Doll V- shaped or Teddy Bear U-shaped, it has to be short.  Though  I strongly prefer a muzzle with a sharper wedge on the edge than one that is blunter, I find both acceptable because it has its own charm... and both are pleasant to look at as long as it is SHORT and they maintain that other Breed Specifics:

...Small erect ears that are erect all the time is more ideal than one that is not erect and moves to an erect position when at attention.

...Almond shaped eyes is a must otherwise, a round eye would give the Pomeranian a mousey look.  Though the American standard calls for dark colored eyes, for obvious reasons, the English black eyes with black mascara around the ideals has a better appeal.

...Pronounced stop is superior to a sufficient stop.

...Good head coat to match a voluminous super body coat will be very impressive.

In the final analysis, the head with the overall package will determine the quality of the dog.

Hi Basilio,

Very informative blog, explains the differnece between the two face types very well.

Can you please elaborate on the reference made to human faces.

Regards, Gaurav

The baby doll face(in addition to the foxy expression) gives the aura of the exquisite pixie faces with a smiling expression...yes, exquisite, like porcelain...

...with small noses tilted upwards like the refined English noses; and

...very small lips like the Japanese geisha dolls which give you the impression of a smiling face as if they were tea party.

My comparison to the refined English nose and the small smiling Japanese lips of dolls represent the essence, the aura, the feel, of what the ideal baby doll face should look like

...as contrasted to the coarser teddy bear or chowey face which represent another type but has its own charm; however, in my opinion, not quite as desirable or pleasing to the eye.

Hopefully, by exposing pomeranian breeders and fanciers to the classic baby doll head, they will learn to appreciate the true breed head type with that foxy expression...an perhaps strive for this head type in their breeding program.
